Read the following passage about the

elements of
the Monroe Doctrine. Take notes on the elements of the doctrine - you will be responsible to know this for your unit test.
The
Monroe Doctrine
was written in response to events that took place between 1820 and 1823. In the early 19th Century, many Latin American nations won their independence from Spain. Between 1820 and 1823, Spain and other European powers hoped to maintain influence over these new nations; additionally, Russia tried to gain control over North American territories along the northwest Pacific Coast. The constant threat of foreign influence over the American continent led President Monroe to issue the Monroe Doctrine as part of his annual message to Congress.
In his message to Congress Monroe declared:
‘The American continents … are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers.’
Elements of the Monroe Doctrine
President Monroe made it very clear that:
1.the US would not interfere with any existing European colonies
2.The US would not interfere with European affairs
3.Europe should not try to colonize new areas in North/South America
4.European involvement in North/South America would be viewed as a danger to the US peace and safety.
